Now that the iPad2 is finally out, it’s time to start discussing the best apps for download. Let’s face it, when it comes to all of these mobile devices from Apple, they are only as good as the collection of apps you use to run them. And with thousands of them to choose from, there’s no shortage of choices to keep you from productivity. There are also plenty of options for being unproductive too.

The Drop Box

When Apple designed the iPad it was clearly a device intended to be mobile. Without mobility there’s no point in having one, let alone using it. The drop box app takes mobility to a new level by providing users with their own personal, virtual “cloud”. You simply download the app to both your home PC and your mobile devices, then drop any documents or files you want access to, while on the road, into the Drop Box folder. On your iPad2 you simply start the application to get access to everything in that folder. With Drop Box there’s no more need to waste precious time syncing via the USB port.

GarageBand

GarageBand seems like an app that would appeal only to the musician-types. But the truth is the sheer uniqueness of this one makes it very popular for both musicians and non-musicians alike. GarageBand gives you a virtual guitar, bass, piano, and rhythm section so you can make music anywhere you want. It’s a great way to pass the time on the tube or city bus system. Oh yeah. When dreams become reality…

InstaPaper

InstaPaper may have started out as just an app of mere convenience, but it’s changing the way iPad users are reading web pages. With this app on both your home PC and your iPad2, you can read web page content without all the clutter of advertisements, RSS feeds, and other annoying garbage. Simply save the pages on your home PC, with the app, and then bring up InstaPaper on the iPad2. You’ll being viewing the saved pages – but just the text and pictures – with none of the advertisements or junk.

PenUltimate

Yes it’s true – PenUltimate is yet another sticky notes program. Yet what makes it different is the fact that no typing is required. Simply use your finger as a pen to scribble across the iPad2 screen, and your movements are captured on the virtual paper. With PenUltimate you can now create writing that’s impossible to read on your iPad2 – just like you do on paper!

VMware View Client

If you use the VMware to create virtual machines inside your home PC, you can now access them remotely through this app for the iPad2. What’s great about this app is that if the virtual machine is left running when you leave home, you can access it directly without the need of having to go through the host. It’s like combining the best of the WAN and LAN in a tiny, convenient virtual world.
